Download and Upload WordPress Site: A Step-by-Step Guide

WordPress is a popular content management system that powers millions of websites across the web. Whether you want to move your site to a new server or create a backup for your site, downloading and uploading your WordPress site is crucial. This guide walks you through the simple steps to download and upload your WordPress site.

Downloading Your WordPress Site

  1. Install an FTP client

You need an FTP client application to download your WordPress site. Some of the popular FTP clients are FileZilla, CuteFTP, and Cyberduck. You can choose the one that suits your needs.

  1. Connect to your server using FTP

Once you have installed the FTP client, connect to your server using your FTP credentials (username and password). Navigate to the public_html folder which is the main directory for your WordPress site.

  1. Download all your WordPress files

Select all your WordPress files from the public_html folder and download them to your local computer. This process might take several minutes depending on the size of your website.

  1. Export your database

Login to your WordPress site and go to the ‘Tools’ menu. Select ‘Export’ and choose ‘All Content’ to export the database of your WordPress site. Save the file to your local computer.

Uploading Your WordPress Site

  1. Create a new database

You need to create a new database for your newly uploaded WordPress site. Login to your cPanel and go to ‘MySQL Databases’. Enter your desired database name and click ‘Create Database’. Next, create a new user and password for the database.

  1. Edit wp-config.php file

Open your WordPress site files downloaded earlier and locate the wp-config.php file. Edit the file with your new database name, username, and password details.

  1. Upload all your WordPress files

Connect to your new server using FTP credentials and upload all your WordPress files (including the edited wp-config.php file) to the public_html folder.

  1. Import your database

Login to your new WordPress site and go to the ‘Tools’ menu. Select ‘Import’ and choose ‘WordPress’. Upload the database file that you exported earlier to your new WordPress site.

  1. Update your site URLs

To ensure that all your links and images work properly, update the site URLs from the ‘Settings’ menu in your new WordPress site.

That’s it! You have successfully downloaded and uploaded your WordPress site. With these simple steps, you can move your site to a new server or create a backup of your WordPress site.
